Building a Door to Hope

Pea Kimleng, a 14-year-old girl in grade 3 at Taduol Primary School, is one of eight children. Having grown up in a destitute family, when her parents could no longer afford her uniform or study materials, Pea Kimleng had no choice but to quit school. Then, to find work and support their family, her parents migrated the entire family to Thailand, just across the border.

Pea Kimleng’s need, and that of her family, was great. And that’s where the generosity and love of people like you comes in.

Through your gifts toward our Education Programs in Cambodia, Samaritan’s Purse was able to build a new four-classroom building in Pea Kimleng’s village. The construction included clean water facilities, a new toilet block and playground. We trained all of the teachers in effective teaching methods, hired a literacy coach to meet the needs of slow learners and formed a school support committee in the community.

We also fitted the school out with new resources, learning tablets, reading and numeracy toolkits, textbooks and storybooks.

When Pea Kimleng’s parents heard about the new school facilities in Taduol, they sent their daughter back to live with her grandparents so she could return to school.

Since then, she has come a long way in her learning. With the help of the literacy coach and new resources, she went from being a slow learner to one of the best performing students in her class!

She even spends extra time in the library, using the new reading toolkits and literacy applications on the tablets.

“I am so happy that my parents sent me back to school. I come to school every day now,” said Pea Kimleng. “The new building is very nice and I love it so much. There are no insects, and it doesn’t leak when it rains.

“I like the tablets and the reading toolkits because I can learn and play at the same time. Now I can read and spell very well; I got high scores in my tests this month! I want to be a teacher when I grow up and help other kids like me.
