Volunteer Information: Lismore, Northern Rivers Region NSW

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Samaritan’s Purse Australian Disaster Relief. Samaritan’s Purse is responding to major flooding in the areas of Lismore, and south of Lismore into Coraki, Woodburn, Broadwater, Wardell, and surrounding areas. Volunteer opportunities are available to serve with a Samaritan’s Purse Disaster Relief team.. Please read the information below to get started.

Meeting Point: Wollongbar Christian Centre – From here, teams of volunteers will be organised and deployed to worksites daily.

Time: Arrive at 7:30am for orientation. Work will end by 4:00pm. A brief safety orientation is provided and required before volunteering on a Samaritan’s Purse site. Volunteers may choose to work a half or full day.

Open: Beginning Tuesday April 26th, 6 days a week, Monday – Saturday

Age eligibility: Anyone is welcome to volunteer with Samaritan’s Purse; however, due to the nature of flood recovery work, volunteers must be aged 14 years and older for most tasks.  Youth volunteers must be accompanied by a parent or group leader. There are no skills required to volunteer.

What to bring: Sturdy closed-toe shoes or work boots. Tools and safety gear will be provided on site. Volunteers will be provided with a Samaritan’s Purse t-shirt that they may keep.

Food: A packed lunch is available (basic salad and meat sandwiches, with snacks), those with specific dietary requirements are encouraged to supply their own suitable lunch.

Before you arrive:  To make check-in faster on the day you arrive, please pre-fill our volunteer registration forms here. A paper-copy will be available on-site if you are unable to complete the form online.

What to expect: Volunteers will be assisting homeowners whose property has been affected by floods. Activities may include:

  • Content removal of flooded homes
  • Removing damaged gyprock walls, cabinets, floors, etc.
  • Cleaning and sanitisation of homes.
  • Similar types of assistance focused on helping families get back into their homes safely.

Volunteers will be paired with an experienced team leader to guide them throughout the work.

Groups: Volunteer groups are welcome. To ensure our site leaders are ready to accommodate a large group, we request that you confirm your group booking and number of people at least 24 hours in advance by calling 0460 420 166

Staying overnight? Volunteers from across Australia are welcome to serve in the Lismore, Northern Rivers region, NSW. Transportation to the deployment site and accommodation are typically at one’s own expense. Limited accommodation (camping style) may be available on the deployment site*, which must be coordinated through our team before you arrive. *Please note all volunteers sleeping on site and regular volunteers (working 3 or more days) must undergo a police background check before arriving on site, or provide a valid up-to-date check as part of your application. If you do not have a current check, the Sydney office will process one at Samaritan’s Purse’ cost on receipt of your online application.
