Good News. Great Joy.

Tropical Cyclone Winston devastated Fiji in February this year, and one of the hardest hit villages was Rakiraki. There are 319 family groups that live in this village, and 80% of their homes were destroyed or uninhabitable.

When disaster strikes, Samaritan’s Purse connects with our partners on the ground to ask for a quick report of the damage. In Fiji, we have a solid base of volunteers in-country that form our Operation Christmas Child leadership team.

Our Australian disaster relief assessors were able to connect with the leadership team and partner churches in Fiji to distribute tarpaulins to families that had damaged roofs. Fijian authorities also requested that Samaritan’s Purse tarp schools that had been damaged by the storm. To date, 3,200 tarps have been distributed to families in need, and 20 schools have been tarped!

The children have not been forgotten!

Thanks to the great generosity of our Operation Christmas Child supporters in Australia and New Zealand, the children of Rakiraki village were able to receive gift-filled shoeboxes! These simple gifts touched the hearts of their parents and brought Good News and Great Joy to children in desperate need after the terrible disaster.
