Providing Relief After Traumatic Bushfires

Don and Alison were aware of the fires happening around Australia, however they never expected it to come near them. The night before the bushfires hit, Don and Alison evacuated their home in Bairnsdale, VIC. The next morning a neighbour contacted Don to tell him to get home quickly as his gazebo was burning! Don called the fire brigade and then rushed home. When he got home most of the fire had passed, however he spent hours trying to contain the burning gazebo and putting out spot fires around the house. Fortunately, their home survived, but much of the property around the house was covered in fallen trees and debris, and they lost animals and other items in the blaze.

After an exhausting and traumatic few days Don and Alison had to work out how to start the overwhelming task of repairing the damage. That same week, Samaritan’s Purse arrived in Bairnsdale ready to support families in need.  Alison recalls her first experience with the Samaritan’s Purse volunteers, “We had to go out for two or three hours and when we returned we couldn’t believe what they [the Samaritan’s Purse team] were able to achieve in that short time. What impressed me is that they are entirely self-sufficient, they just bring everything, and they don’t expect anything of us.” Within a couple of days of Samaritan’s Purse working on the property, it was been cleared and Don and Alison could start to see the way to keep moving forward. Watch their story above.

Samaritan’s Purse is continuing to respond to the unprecedented bushfires around Australia. Our desire is to help families get back on their feet, providing hope and helping in Jesus’ Name in the midst of this disaster.
