Samaritan’s Purse Responds to Western Australia Bushfires

The Wooroloo region, northeast of Perth, was devastated by a series of horrific bushfires that rapidly swept across the Western state in early February. It destroyed 86 houses, burnt up to 11,000 hectares of land and shut down access to electricity.

Samaritan’s Purse responded to the fires by engaging church partners already on the ground in Perth to help families recover and return home.

Through our partnership, the churches were able to identify the immediate needs of people affected in their community and provide emergency relief.

“The local church is our closest connection to these communities,” said Dan Stephens, Disaster Response Manager of Samaritan’s Purse Australia.

“As we equip them with disaster relief resources, they are able to build relationships and bring hope to families who’ve lost everything.”

One of the churches we worked with was Dreambuilders Church, based in the Malaga region and Swan Valley. The church’s community program coordinator, Ursula, described the impact of the fires. “Many people have been affected, some homes lost and others severely damaged. Food insecurity has been a big issue and loneliness has increased significantly.”

After Samaritan’s Purse came alongside Dreambuilders Church with funding and resources for bushfire relief, Ursula and her team of volunteers were able to prepare and distribute emergency hampers to Perth locals. The hampers included essential food supplies, a wheelbarrow, needles and thread, shovels, rope and many more practical resources.

Each hamper also contained a letter from Samaritan’s Purse and the church offering ways for recipients to get connected for further support.

“We distributed a hamper to one lady and her son whose house was not liveable after the fires because of the smoke and water damage. The emergency kit will help them get over the hump,” said Ursula.

“This is our opportunity to serve the people who have been badly impacted in our community. It’s a privilege to be able to put these things into their hands and see that level of anxiety decrease – just from knowing that they’ve got food to eat.”

Samaritan’s Purse is still offering support in the Wooroloo area through partners like Dreambuilders to assist residents as they begin the road to recovery.

Our teams are also working alongside the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association’s Rapid Response Team, who are able to provide emotional and spiritual care to families, and crisis-response training to churches.

Together, we are sharing the love of Christ with those in need and letting them know that they aren’t forgotten.

Please pray for the people of Western Australia who have been through so much. Ask the Lord to use our church partners to meet people’s needs and help many find hope in the Name of Jesus Christ.
