Serving Australians During COVID-19

With COVID-19 continuing to impact the physical, emotional and financial health of Australians, Samaritan’s Purse is mobilising its church partners to reach people who are suffering in their local communities.

As New South Wales entered its eighth week of lockdown on 16 August, our Disaster Relief team engaged church partners in Bankstown, Merimbula and Blacktown.

Here’s how our church partners are currently serving people in desperate need in these regions:

District Uniting Church in Bankstown is reaching out to international students, refugees, asylum seekers, the homeless and those who have lost their jobs due to the pandemic to help meet their everyday needs. The church is offering food hampers, bread, fresh vegetables and vouchers for utilities.

Fellowship Baptist Church in Blacktown has been caring for the needs of both their church members and the wider community by distributing hampers with everyday essentials to bring comfort to those who live alone, have small children or have suffered financially from COVID-19.

Sapphire Life Opportunities in Merimbula is distributing fresh food hampers to individuals and families within the Bega Valley Shire who are experiencing hardship and social isolation because of the current lockdowns.

As Samaritan’s Purse comes alongside each of these churches to support their community programs, together we are able to be the hands and feet of Jesus Christ and share His love in a tangible way.

This response comes 12 months after Samaritan’s Purse first partnered with local churches to bring physical relief to Australians impacted by the 2020 COVID-19 lockdowns in New South Wales, Queensland, Tasmania and South Australia. Our church partners cared for thousands of individuals across the country.

The local church is a source of light and hope. They know their community and are able to identify people’s needs. Our role is to walk alongside these churches, empowering and equipping them to serve their community in times of crisis.

Please pray for our teams and church partners as we work together to bring relief during this pandemic. Also pray that the families and individuals who are facing hardship would know that they are not alone.
