EMERGENCY MEDICINE PHYSICIAN

The Emergency Medicine Physician is responsible for providing clinical care to patients in emergency and triage settings, during an international DART medical response. This may include the care of patients in a fast-paced hospital or an outpatient setting. The Emergency Medicine Physician will follow Samaritan’s Purse protocols.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • – Maintain a personal, active relationship with Jesus Christ and be a consistent witness for Jesus Christ.
  • – Attend daily morning devotions and participate in prayer support for the ministry and ongoing response.
  • – Deploy internationally to disaster settings as part of the DART team, serving with fellow members to further Samaritan’s Purse’s mission.
  • – Follow the policies and procedures of Samaritan’s Purse as set forth in the Policy Manual.
  • – Decisively triage, assess and quickly provide emergency medical care and monitoring of ill or injured patients who report to the emergency room or outpatient clinic.
  • – Complete clinical assessments and diagnoses with the use of basic laboratory tests and basic imaging.
  • – Develop and order effective patient care plans based on assessment findings.
  • – Perform minor invasive procedures as needed.
  • – Refer patients to appropriate next levels of care.
  • – Prescribe medications in accordance with the Samaritan’s Purse formularies.
  • – Communicate regularly with other facility departments to ensure continuity in patient care.
  • – Ensure smooth inter-departmental patient transfers and referrals to external facilities for further care.
  • – Consults with local providers and health officials as requested by Clinical Director.
  • – Collect patient care data and complete the necessary documentation for reporting to the multidisciplinary team.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • – Post-resident with a minimum of two years of experience as a Physician in an Emergency Medicine setting (time spent in Emergency Medicine residency counts toward the minimum requirement).
  • – Emergency Medicine experience within the last five years.
  • – Completion of accredited training as a Physician specialising in Emergency Medicine with current active licensure and board certification.
  • – Available on short notice for deployment of 3–4 weeks, once or twice per year.
  • – Able to serve within a very fast-paced environment, 7 days a week for extended hours while on deployment.
  • – Able to work as a member of a team, particularly cross-culturally.
  • – Demonstrated travel, volunteer or work experience in developing countries.
  • – Willingness to work in unstable, insecure areas.
  • – Teaching experience.
