For 71-year-old widow Thia, having struggled with mobility issues after a leg injury, she had been confined to using unkept communal toilet blocks which weren’t accessible in the dark night or during rainy seasons. Her situation grew dire when her daughter—her primary support, passed away.
In Trà Vinh province, along the Mekong River Delta, Thia and many others lack access to proper sanitation, leading to waterborne diseases that disproportionately affect children and the elderly. Recognising this urgent need, Samaritan’s Purse launched the Water and Sanitation/Hygiene program (WASH) three years ago, working with local officials to provide education workshops and identify those in need to receive toilet and shower blocks.
When Samaritan’s Purse identified Thia to receive a new bathroom block on her property, she was overjoyed.
The WASH team not only built her a toilet/shower unit but also installed a ramp to accommodate her disability. “I can also take a shower inside and clean dishes at the front. It is close to my house so I can approach it easier with my pained legs” she shared with relief.
Through this project, Samaritan’s Purse has restored dignity and hope to countless individuals in Trà Vinh. By providing essential sanitation, they are more than just helpers—they are loving neighbours, reflecting God’s compassion in tangible ways. The impact of the WASH Project extends beyond hygiene; it is a testament to kindness, dignity, and faith in action.
