On Christmas night 2023, a powerful storm tore through the Gold Coast’s Scenic Rim region, leaving thousands without power and water as homes and roads were overwhelmed by fallen trees and debris. Mount Tamborine towards Upper Coomera was especially impacted, with residents facing weeks without essential services.
In response, Samaritan’s Purse set up a Disaster Relief Unit at Crosslife Church in Upper Coomera. Throughout January, more than 120 volunteers came together to help clear 75 homes and businesses and restore order. For many affected residents, this act of Christian compassion provided hope
during a dark time.
Ten months later, the recovery process remains slow, complicated by labour shortages. With the new threat of bushfires on the horizon, Samaritan’s Purse returned to the Scenic Rim in October bringing volunteers, equipment and the hope shared in Christ to help residents prepare their properties.
For Dave and Francis, a couple running a farm stay on Mount Tamborine, this support was a lifeline. Exhausted by months of repairs, they were deeply moved to learn that Samaritan’s Purse volunteers—including students from Northside Christian School—were coming back to help. The couple had previously received a Bible filled with notes of encouragement from these students, a reminder of God’s love and presence. Seeing the same school’s students return lifted their spirits.
“Seeing the volunteers, I didn’t want to be all teary, but that’s how I felt. There’s just a sense of, wow—we’re deeply grateful,” Francis shared. She described the work of the volunteers as a “beautiful, shared experience,” reflecting God’s love through service.
Volunteer Mitch, who participated in both the January and October cleanups, shared how his faith drives him to serve: “Christian life is something we do together, and Samaritan’s Purse brings us that opportunity in Jesus’ name. You don’t have to go far to serve—you can love your neighbour right here.”
Through acts of faith, Samaritan’s Purse volunteers together with Billy Graham Rapid Response Team chaplains have brought hope to 22 families on the Gold Coast, demonstrating the love of Christ in their every action.
