Hope Brings Joy for Sudan

This year, Samaritan’s Purse rushed emergency food and other critical aid to tens of thousands of people displaced by war.

Rania* and her children once lived a peaceful life in Sudan. Her five children attended school, and food was plentiful. But everything changed when civil war reached their village. Armed groups attacked, leaving destruction in their wake.

Rania and her husband made a heartbreaking decision: she would flee with their three youngest children, while her husband and their two eldest stayed behind. With her husband disabled from a previous war injury, he couldn’t make the journey.

Rania and the children fled into the wilderness with nothing but the clothes on their backs. After several days, they arrived at a crowded camp in Kordofan, where nearly 700,000 displaced people were seeking refuge. The harsh conditions and lack of food quickly took their toll on the family.

“I miss everything about my former life,” Rania shared. “I don’t know if my husband and children are alive, or if they have enough food and water. I am worried, but I can’t do anything.”

A few weeks after arriving at the camp, Rania’s family received a food basket from Samaritan’s Purse. The basket, filled with corn, beans, salt, and oil, provided enough food to sustain them for a month. “The food has helped fill our stomachs and make us strong,” she said. Along with food, they received soap, cooking equipment, and a tarp to cover their shelter, which had previously let in rain.

Thousands of families like Rania’s are receiving life-saving support from Samaritan’s Purse, which includes food distributions, mobile medical units, and shelter supplies. Severely malnourished children are given a nutrient-rich peanut paste to restore their health. Samaritan’s Purse is also improving sanitation in the camps by digging freshwater wells and installing latrines, preventing the spread of disease.

How Your Gifts Are Bringing Joy to Sudan

Jamira*, another mother, also received critical aid after fleeing her home with her four children. They travelled nearly 800 kilometres over three weeks to escape the conflict. Jamira hadn’t heard from her soldier husband since they left, and she feared for his safety.

Despite the hardships, Jamira remained steadfast in her faith. “Before we left, I prayed with my kids, asking God to protect us,” she said. Her children received food and supplements to combat malnutrition, and they now have access to clean water from a Samaritan’s Purse well.

Both Rania and Jamira cling to hope that one day their families will be reunited and peace will return to Sudan. Samaritan’s Purse continues to provide both physical and spiritual support to displaced families, offering the love of Christ in their darkest moments.
