Samaritan’s Purse Dispatches Relief to Vietnam in Response to Typhoon Yagi

Sydney, NSW, 19 September, 2024 – This week, Samaritan’s Purse Australia and New Zealand dispatched pallets of water filters and solar lights to join urgent supplies from our international headquarters.

Catastrophic floods and landslides— triggered by Typhoon Yagi, which hit on September 7— have killed over 200 people and displaced more than 100,000 people in northern Vietnam.

Samaritan’s Purse is amongst the first to respond in the rural province of Yen Bai, where flash flooding has submerged entire homes along the Red River.

Working together with provincial administrators, the supplies will be received and distributed by Samaritan’s Purse staff and partners in Vietnam. Our teams have already distributed water filters, solar lights, and kitchen kits to families in need as well as 500 life jackets, 500 flashlights and 1,000 rescue whistles to assist first responders and survivors forced to evacuate their homes.

“The need is great and continues to grow. Please pray the people in Vietnam as they recover from this storm and please pray for our teams on the ground as they’re responding.”
– Jodie Reid – International Project Manager, Samaritan’s Purse Australia/New Zealand.

Recently, the Samaritan’s Purse DC-8 cargo plane departed from Greensboro, N.C and landed in Vietnam on Monday, 16 Sept. carrying 19 metric tons of relief supplies for families reeling from Typhoon Yagi. The materials—which include enough water filters, jerry buckets, solar lights, and kitchen kits to support 3,000 families—are already reaching people in need in the hardest hit communities. So far, Samaritan’s Purse has distributed nearly 70% of all of this life-saving aid less than two days since the DC-8’s arrival. Another cargo plane is also on the way carrying an additional 18 metric tons of more relief including additional kitchen sets, blankets and solar lights.
