Bundaberg, QLD | Flood Relief | 2013

Cyclone Oswald triggered torrential rain and a series of tornados which resulted in devastating floods throughout Queensland. Bundaberg was one of the worst affected regions as the Burnett River peaked at a record 9.6 metres, damaging approximately 2,000 homes and businesses and leaving 7,500 residents displaced. Samaritan’s Purse deployed a disaster response team to Bundaberg and worked with around 65 volunteers to clean flood-affected properties over a 3-month period.

Springwood, NSW | Bushfire Relief | 2013

On Thursday 17 October, numerous fires broke out around New South Wales, including the Linksview Road fire in Springwood. This fire destroyed 196 homes in one day as it burned on three fronts: Linksview Road, Mount York, and State Mine. This was the largest fire impacting the most properties, in New South Wales, in more than 10 years. This then led to the New South Wales government to declare a state of emergency. Samaritan’s Purse responded, delivering 200 bushfire recovery kits to help affected families sift through the rubble and deploying 84 volunteers who completed 37 work orders on badly damaged or destroyed homes.

Sampson Flat & Pinery, SA | Bushfire Relief | 2015

The 2015 Sampson Flat bushfire was in the northern Adelaide Hills and the outer Adelaide metropolitan area. The fire began on 2 January 2015 during a day of extreme heat and lasted until 9 January 2015, burning more than 20,000 hectares of land. The Pinery bushfire primarily affected the lower mid north and west Barossa Valley regions immediately north of Gawler, South Australia. The Pinery bushfire destroyed 91 houses from 25 November to 2 December of 2015. Teams deployed to South Australia to help in the recovery process in the fire-affected regions after a request from the South Australia State Recovery Office. Press reports stated that more than 80 homes were destroyed or seriously damaged.

Tathra, NSW | Bushfire Relief | 2018

In March 2018, bushfires raged in Tathra New South Wales, destroying or causing damage to over 100 homes. Samaritan’s Purse deployed our Disaster Relief Unit and a team of volunteers to work alongside homeowners during the recovery period. Our volunteers completed 66 work orders and delivered 70 bushfire recovery kits filled with tools to help with cleaning up and searching for items of personal value that survived the fires.

Townsville, QLD | Flood Relief | 2019

In January 2019, a monsoonal storm inundated the city of Townsville. 1.9 metres of rain fell, forcing the evacuation of 2,000 homes. Queensland Premier, Annastacia Palaszczuk, described it as “a once in a hundred-year event”. Samaritan’s Purse deployed relief teams to Townsville to help clean up the flood damage, get houses ready for repairs, and love the survivors in the name of Jesus.

Stanthorpe, QLD | Bushfire Relief | 2019

In September 2019, Samaritan’s Purse Australian Disaster Relief deployed to Stanthorpe, Queensland, in response to the devastation caused by the bushfires. Volunteers assisted homeowners whose properties were destroyed by the fires by clearing debris, removing fallen trees and branches, and sifting through the ashes to locate important personal items. The team also distributed fire recovery kits, which included items such as shovels, rakes, hammers, gloves, face masks and overalls. These kits provided families with basic tools to enable them to make a start on clearing their properties.

Bunyip, VIC | Bushfire Relief | 2019

On 1 March 2019, lightning strikes ignited fires in the Victorian townships of Tonimbuk, Bunyip North, Tynong North and Garfield North, located about one hour’s drive southeast of Melbourne. The fires destroyed 29 homes and 67 sheds and outbuildings, and damaged hundreds more properties, burning over 100,000 hectares of land. Samaritan’s Purse responded by sending volunteer teams. Teams were able to chop and stack wood, remove burned fence posts, clear fence lines, clean up garden waste and debris from properties and chainsaw work.

Rappville, NSW | Bushfire Relief | 2019

Samaritan’s Purse deployed to Rappville in northern New South Wales in response to the devastating bushfires that ravaged south-eastern Queensland and northern New South Wales. One of our Disaster Relief Units was on the ground, equipped with chainsaws, tools and fire recovery kits. The kits contained personal protective equipment, a shovel, mattock, large and small crowbar, hammer, rake and sieve and were distributed to homeowners to help find salvageable items and clear properties. There were 168 structures damaged or destroyed in the region, including 42 homes in Rappville. We partnered with churches and the local council, removing debris, helping with chainsaw work and general property clearing for affected families.

Taree, NSW | Bushfire Relief | 2019

The 2019–20 bushfires were unprecedented in their extent and intensity, with fire grounds in New South Wales covering 5.5 million hectares (7% of the state), including over 2.7 million hectares of national parks (38% of the NSW national park system). In northern New South Wales, families faced devastation beyond comprehension as a result of the bushfires. Samaritan’s Purse Australian Disaster Relief Unit deployed to Taree on the Mid-North Coast of New South Wales, 317 km north of Sydney. With the assistance of local churches, volunteers joined together to work on multiple properties that had been impacted by the fires in the region from November to December. The volunteers worked in sweltering heat, using chainsaws to chop up fallen trees, removing sheet metal from homes, shovelling ash, and more.
